August 2011 Preface to this English Translation
of Laban's 1926 Choreographie
It's been over 20 years since I first saw a copy of Laban's German book Choreographie.
For a long time I've had most of the translation on my computer, and when I discovered some free time this summer it seemed the obvious thing to put my attention to it and get this material out of my computer and into the open so any interested person can see it.
I still have to consider this as a rough draft.
I’m sure there are mistakes, ... especially in some of the lengthy notation series, and probably some translation inconsistencies.
But overall, I think I’m satisfied with the outcome, and I’m glad to get it out.... out of my own computer, ... out into the open space.... out into the air ....
I welcome any comments, especially any errors you might notice.
And I especially welcome queries from any interested people looking to take this work further.
(go to my home web page for a contact form to reach me)
Laban’s Choreographie changed the way I conceive of and see space. My hope is that it can also widen the vision of others.
My dedication for this presentation is to my Berlinerin Friend Evamaria Zierach, who poured over so many of these words and pages with me, discussing the meanings of what she called Laban’s old style German writing!
If you decide to come.... Enjoy the adventure...
